Exclusive Interview With Jestine Chin
Home and Decoration: How did you get involved in the interior design industry?
Jestine Chin: First and foremost, PURE Interior is not an interior design company but an interior furnishing and decorating company. Personally, I have been involved in the interior design industry since the start of my career.
Upon graduation from Architectural Studies in NUS, I was immensely drawn to interior styling instead of architectural designing. Through my first partnership ventures with renowned brands such as Knoll Furniture, B&B Italia, Molten, etc… I have since immersed myself in this trade for the past 30 years, constantly pushing forward and widening my horizon.
Home and Decoration: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of signatures that help to identify your projects?
Jestine Chin: I enjoy experimenting and experiencing different design solutions through the projects I have undertaken. The process of curating and providing styling solutions suited to our client’s desired lifestyle constantly challenges my design aesthetics and acumen. However, as a versatile stylist and/or interior decorator, I do not specifically prescribe to any work style or any kind of signature style that identifies PURE’s projects. If there is one, then it shall be sophisticated, discerning, and bespoke.
Home and Decoration: Being in love with our works is always the key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an Interior Decorator?
Jestine Chin: Passion is a powerful motivator, if you are in love, you will achieve better results that is for sure. I am in love with my job because I am surrounded by beauty, talents, and diversity from far and near.
Home and Decoration: Keeping up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?
Jestine Chin: You have to be sensitive and curious to know the happenings of things and events around you……such as fashion, technology, music, innovative designs. Instead of trying to keep current with new trends, I prefer to discover the new directions of trends.
Home and Decoration: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?
Jestine Chin: I do not really see myself as an artist. However, I do have great admiration for women who established themselves well in the architectural field, such as Zaha Hadid for her boldness in Architecture design and Paola Navone for her sensibility in design and styling in response to her exposure to different cultures.
Home and Decoration: How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?
Jestine Chin: Perfect chemistry between myself and my clients results in harmony and happiness for both parties. It is a journey to realize a common goal together infused with joy and friendship.
Home and Decoration: Do you think working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?
Jestine Chin: I definitely flourish in a working team as I always believe two or more brains are always better than one. Sharing ideas and experiences help to broaden one’s knowledge and steer a better personal development.
Home and Decoration: Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
Jestine Chin: We have just completed the interior furnishing for Pan Pacific London for all the guestrooms and the public spaces, which is the latest prestigious hotel in London. We are proud to be able to work with the renowned Yabul Pulsbelberg which is one of the most innovative architectural and interior design studios in the world. We produced customized designs of its work for the hotel rooms, and sources for all the curated pieces specified by the studio which open doors for us to collaborate with brands all over the world. It is an eye-opening experience for us.
