Lori Morris: Exclusive Interview
Meet this top interior designer from Toronto
“From prolific artists and writers to the poets and musicians who define our times, great works of art evolve through a partnership shared with their muse. Providing focus, providing inspiration, providing clarity. At Lori Morris, we define their inspiration through the work of artisans and the vision of our clientele, capturing both the essence and elegance of a piece and adapting it into the narrative of a space. Every room, a story. Every story, a dedication to our muse.”
Home and Decoration had the opportunity to interview Lori Morris, the founder of this interior design studio! Hope you enjoy learning more about the work of this top interior designer!
Home and Decoration: How did you get involved in the interior design Industry?
Lori Morris: I always knew I wanted to pursue something different for my life, to show the world my design abilities and create my own lane.
Home and Decoration: How would you describe your work style? Do you have any kind of signatures that help to identify your projects?
Lori Morris: I am an artist first and foremost so I never follow a rule book or think ‘inside the box. For me design is about interpreting my clients’ dreams, mixing traditional and contemporary genres, and adding a sexy, unexpected twist to create a feeling. Color always plays an important role in expressing this so you will always see unique combinations of color and of course many layers of texture and detail selections to add interest and personality. ‘Sexy French’, my signature style I created, is inspired by my love of French and Modern design and describes my cohesive melding of traditional architecture with a gorgeous, sexy twist for a sumptuous yet comfortable and very livable space.
Home and Decoration: Being in love with our work is always the key to achieving better results. Are you in love with this job? What do you love most about being an interior designer?
Lori Morris: I love all of my projects and consider myself very fortunate to be living my dream every day while creating my clients’ dreams.
Home and Decoration: What is your philosophy on design and life?
Lori Morris: Be yourself. Work harder. Find your own voice and be fearless in your expression. I never follow trends and always find inspiration in my love of nature, fashion, classic architecture, and my clients’ vision. Each project takes on its own unique look and feel. Every time.
Home and Decoration: Keeping up to date on all the trends is essential for anyone who wants to conquer this market. In what ways do you keep current with new trends?
Lori Morris: My designs are timeless because I don’t pay attention to trends.
Home and Decoration: How would you describe your personal decorating style?
Lori Morris: Fearless. Sexy. Functional-because if it doesn’t work it doesn’t count. And most importantly, Elegant.
Home and Decoration: All artists need some inspiration to work, and interior designers are artists too. So, what or who really inspires you?
Lori Morris: I’m inspired by everything around me but my love of traditional architecture, haute couture fashion, and nature shines through in all my designs.
Home and Decoration: Inspiration is something that pushes everyone to create unique things. What makes you see the world in a different way?
Lori Morris: My design approach is simple: No rules. Each new project is an exciting opportunity to push the limits of my artistry and create a living breathing work of art for my clients.
Home and Decoration: How important is a perfect chemistry between you and your clients to achieve the best results?
Lori Morris: Trust is extremely important for me to create something special. I have incredible clients who fuel my artistry with their trust in me, to design something completely unique for their home.
Home and Decoration: Choosing the best pieces to compose a project can be the secret to getting the best overall result. Although it seems easy, this is a delicate task and needs full attention on time to execute. Do you have some tips for those who do not know well how to start a challenge like this?
Lori Morris: Decide how you want the space to feel and how you want to live in it. This will determine what colors to select and the pieces that will work best to suit your needs.
Home and Decoration: Do you think working with teams in interior design is better or worse than working alone? Why?
Lori Morris: We have a team of over 45 people at Lori Morris Design and many trades working exclusively with us. Our projects are very detailed and complicated in their design and execution, so we require an arsenal of very talented professionals to make these projects happen.
Home and Decoration: Is there anything exciting that you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?
Lori Morris: We are working on a boutique hotel and supper club that will be absolutely spectacular. It will be an opportunity for everyone who hasn’t worked with us to experience the Lori Morris effect.
Home and Decoration: What has been your greatest accomplishment as a designer? What goals do you have for the future?
Lori Morris: Having the opportunity to design using my full-throttle creativity with a team and clientele who support and encourage my artistic visions. The future is very bright for LMD with many new projects on the horizon.
