As Architects, they are acutely mindful of our social responsibility to the built environment and its profound effect on the human experience and physical health. They are resolute that the expression of their work minimizes or eliminates any negative ecological impact to its surroundings while connecting people with the natural environment.
Their award-winning work has been featured in numerous national and international publications and noted for its holistic perspective across a variety of scales. From the place-making concepts of their extensive master plans to the urbane treatment of large civic, educational and multi-family housing structures, to the blending of built and organic elements providing an indoor/outdoor sensibility to single-family dwellings, they are acutely aware of how space is perceived and utilized. The habitat and context of each site informs their design and gives every project its unique character.
Safdie Rabines Architects are amongst many of their peers selected by BuildDirect as one of the 15 Best Architects in San Diego.
Let’s take a look at some of their residential projects!
This custom “Kafka House” sits astride a steep hillside in La Jolla. The site’s steep slope presented the challenge of maximizing views while creating usable outdoor space with a structure that is essentially floating above the hill, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
Floor-to-ceiling glass and large skylights allow ample natural lighting throughout and unobstructed views that extend from La Jolla Cove to Blacks Beach.

This “Wave House” was designed to maximize views of San Diego Bay while responding to the steep canyon on which it rests.
A two-story family room is nestled into the hillside and opens out to terraced gardens, while the living room, dining area, and kitchen are situated above for maximum views.
Located on the edge of a lush canyon in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego, this “Red House” project is an extensive remodel of a small cottage. The house was reoriented towards the canyon with the creation of a spacious open living space on the top floor.
Large pocket doors and terraces encircle the house and extend the living space outdoors through the palms and into the canyon.
This Beach House is an oceanfront single-family residence located in Malibu, California. The site is organized around a central garden with a guesthouse and the four-bedroom main house located towards the ocean.
A linear atrium through the house visually connects the ocean with the central garden while allowing natural light to permeate throughout the space.
