This lovely lady is one of our all time favorite interior designers. Not only she’ll give you the best interior design inspirations with her luxury design and home decoration trends, she’s something else, super aware of her environments and an amazing attention for detail. Summer Thornton and her team will transform your house into the home of your dreams.
Considering herself a personal stylist for your home, Summer Thornton blends texture, color and pattern to create smart and soulful surroundings all within her design philosophy of unpretentious, fun, and fresh.
Mixing high and low, rough and polished, classic and irreverent, Summer’s interiors are traditional at their core but injected with of-the-moment elements to add personality and energy. Her designs have a curated appeal; combining vintage, custom and antique pieces to create a look she has termed “cultured irreverence”.

After working at a high-end European textile company and under several other interior designers, Summer opened her namesake firm in 2007. Since opening Summer Thornton Design, she’s had the opportunity to work on projects ranging from comprehensive design/build projects and rehabs to those more singularly focused on interior furnishings and decor.
Oftentimes Summer works hand-in-hand with a homeowner’s architect or builder to assist in the final plans of a home. In her most comprehensive projects she often designs the interior architecture, exterior stone and ironwork, custom doors and millwork, custom cabinetry and one of a kind furniture pieces.
Summer and her team manage projects nationwide with the majority of their projects taking place in Chicago and Atlanta. Most of her projects are residential in nature, but the firm continues to expand and take on select commercial design, hospitality and boutique projects. There’s no way to stop them, the talent is notable.
We leave with advice from Summer and her team:
- Do at least one thing your mother wouldn’t
- Reference the past, don’t repeat it
- Use patterns and colors recklessly!
- Insist on natural fabrics
- Colors don’t clash
- Never say never
- More is more
- Always say no to faux
- Every home should have at least 1 thing from a flea market
- Traditional designs need-not be boring
- God’s neutral is green
- Fresh flowers are a room’s best accessory
- No great room was ever designed without taking a risk
- If your neighbors are doing it, you probably shouldn’t
As you can see by her projects and advice, she really knows sophistication and the best way to go when it comes to every aspect, from textils to wall coverings. This lovely lady and her team are definitely the way to go.
